What Are the Symptoms of Hitting a Fat Ball?
Looking forward to a terrific day of golf with your friends? Shooting par should be a cinch and probably 3 or 4 strokes under par sounds right for you. You get the ball set up on the tee, pull that monster club back and whale away. Except instead of driving that ball down the middle of the fairway you feel a thud before impact and the ball just dribbles out in front of the tee. Your friend calls out "Hey you just hit the ball fat". You turn around and wonder "What did he mean by that comment?"
So What is Hitting the Ball Fat?
Basically hitting the ball fat occurs when your club head strikes the ground before making contact with the golf ball. The cause of this problem is that the golfer slides their hips while beginning their downswing. The sliding causes the dropping of the rear shoulder which lowers the golf club and the result is a bad golf shot.
You Are Going to Need a Friend!
Find somone who is willing to watch you swing to see why you are hitting the ball fat. It is just not possible to find out by yourself. Your friend has to look for some telltale signs for you. First, see if you are lowering your rear shoulder when starting your downswing. The dropping of your shoulder will naturally cause the club to strike the ground first.
Another way to check your problem is to take a normal golf stance and start your backswing and then stop at the top of the backswing. Keep the club in that position and use your hips to slide towards your target on a horizontal level. By doing this your rear shoulder naturally drops. If this is what is occurring then you have probably uncovered your problem.
Fixing the Shoulder Drop
So now that you have discovered that you are hitting the ball fat how do you correct it? The solution is learning how to turn your hips correctly. You do not want your hips to slide but you want them to turn in a natural movement with your body. When you are in your downswing use your arms and allow for the natural movement of your body to turn your hips. Remember that your forward arm should stay straight when going into the downswing. Remember to keep your front shoulder down when you are at the top of your swing. Remeber to allow your hips to turn but not slide. Practice these tips and you should be able to correct your problem for hitting the ball fat.
Practice With Your Entire Set of Clubs
You really have to practice using all your clubs when correcting the problem of hitting the ball fat. Every club is different and you have to practice to learn the correct swing with each club.
