Is Hitting the Ball Fat a Big Part of Your Game?

Great day out golfing with your buddies or so you think. Shooting par should be a cinch and probably 3 or 4 strokes under par sounds right for you. You are now ready to get started on that terrific journey so you pull back that club ready to smash that golf ball right down the fairway. But instead of smashing that ball right down the fairway you feel a thud prior to ball contact and your golf ball rolls right out in front of the tee. Your buddy yells "you just hit the ball fat". You turn around and wonder "What did he mean by that comment?"

So What is Hitting the Ball Fat?

When your club head strikes the ground prior to making contact with the golf ball you are hitting the ball fat. The reason that this occurs is because the golfer slides their hips while starting their downswing. The sliding causes the dropping of the rear shoulder which lowers the golf club and the result is a bad golf shot.

This Is Where You Need a Helper!

Find somone who is willing to watch you swing to see why you are hitting the ball fat. You can't possibly know what you are doing incorrectly by yourself. Your buddy can watch for the telltale signs that are causing your problem. Tell the observer to look for your rear shoulder dropping when you begin your downswing. If you are dropping your lower shoulder then the club naturally strikes the ground first.

A different approach to discovering your problem is by taking a normal golf stance and go into your backswing then hold it at the top. Keep the club in that position and use your hips to slide towards your target on a horizontal level. This action will naturally cause the rear shoulder to drop. If this is what is occurring then you have probably uncovered your problem.

Fixing the Shoulder Drop

So now that you have discovered that you are hitting the ball fat how do you correct it? The solution is learning how to turn your hips correctly. You do not want your hips to slide but you want them to turn in a natural movement with your body. When you are in your downswing use your arms and allow for the natural movement of your body to turn your hips. Remember that your forward arm should stay straight when going into the downswing. At the top of the swing, concentrate on your front shoulder staying down. Remeber to allow your hips to turn but not slide. Practice these tips and you should be able to correct your problem for hitting the ball fat.

Use All of Your Clubs in the Bag!

You are going to have to practice with all of your clubs if you want to solve hitting the ball fat. Every club has its own unique qualities and you have to get used to the right way to swing each club. Thru practice and patience you can overcome hitting the ball fat. Then the next time on the course you can tell your golf buddies they better have brought their "A Game" today.
